A Greeting from Cief of Executive Committee

The International Performing Arts Festival OSAKA for Children and Young Audience (Tactan) enters its third year this summer: new venues and new colleagues together taking new steps.

The main spaces this year – Art Space(Osaka City Geijutsu Souzoukan), Osaka Asahi Ward Community Center and Osaka City Asahi Library – will become one multi-purpose complex, containing theatres, workshop spaces, libraries, conference rooms, day nurseries and lobby spaces. This year will see the facilities being employed in their entirety for the nine-day Festival, made possible by the great support we have received from the venue staff, Asahi Ward Office, NPO Children’s Center Asahi and the local people of Asahi.

Further, this year, through the support and cooperation of the Osaka City Education Promotion Bureau we have been able to add Osaka Municipal Cultural Center for Children, Kids Plaza Osaka and Shirokita Citizens Learning Center, for a total of six venues inside Osaka City and a program greatly increased on last year’s event.

Of course, for the works as well, this year we have collected superb pieces from around the world. As every year since the Festival started there is the highly popular “Works for Young Audiences” series, as well as the international collaboration TRAIN (the Kio Company, Théâtre Incliné), especially created for and premiered at this Festival ahead of a world tour. 2009’s event will have a very special flavor indeed.

Our program is increasing year-by-year. Global acclaim is growing and growing. On top of the previously mentioned organizations and supporters, the Festival receives assistance from countless other people and bodies. We plan to continue developing together our Festival in the years to come and hope very much for your support.

Toshimi Matsubara
Chief of Executive Committee

A Greeting from Artistic Director & Producer

I always ask myself: Why should you hold a festival? Is a festival important for society? Will children enjoy the works we select?

Adults are the main focus of our society. Whatever else, children are always placed second. However, we want to see things through the eyes of the underdog. The stage artists congregating for this Festival from around the world have the power to evoke this perspective. Although the strength of live performance is undeniable, more than the work itself it is the humans making it who can create something that reaches out to children. We are learning so much by this Festival.

But this Festival is not just something for children. When children are moved, so too are we. Cultivating a child’s spirit is an expression of an adult’s heart too.

Last but by no means least, I am very grateful to all those who have joined and supported us for Tactan 2009.
